A deck or fence takes more direct abuse than almost any surface on your property. It sits in full sun all summer, soaks up rain, and then goes through Winnipeg's freeze-thaw cycle all winter — water works into the grain, freezes, expands, and lifts the fibres. Untreated or worn wood turns grey, cracks, cups, and splinters. Once rot starts, staining can't reverse it.
The signs a deck or fence is due: the colour has faded to grey, water no longer beads on the surface, boards feel rough or splintery, or the last coat is flaking and worn in the high-traffic spots. Catching it before the wood is damaged is the difference between a refresh and a rebuild.

We help you choose between a solid stain (most colour, most UV protection, hides grey and imperfections) and a semi-transparent stain (shows the wood grain, natural look, needs recoating more often) based on the age and condition of your wood and the look you want.
Stain fails early for one reason more than any other — it goes on over wood that wasn't properly cleaned and prepped. Most of the work is in the preparation.
Step 1 — Estimate and scope. We look at the condition of the wood, note any boards that need attention, talk through stain type and colour, and give you a detailed written estimate.
Step 2 — Cleaning. Dirt, mildew, and old flaking coating are cleaned off so the new stain can bond. Grey, oxidized wood is treated so it takes stain evenly.
Step 3 — Prep and sanding. Rough, splintered, or previously coated areas are sanded. Protruding fasteners are addressed. We mask siding, hardware, and any surfaces that shouldn't get stain, and protect the surrounding landscaping.
Step 4 — Application. We apply the stain in suitable conditions — dry weather, appropriate temperature, out of direct blazing sun where possible so it doesn't flash-dry. We work with the grain, maintain a wet edge, and apply the right number of coats for the product.
Step 5 — Inspection and cleanup. We walk the finished project with you, handle any touch-ups, pull the masking, and leave the site clean.

Cost depends on the size and condition of the wood, how much cleaning and sanding is needed, and the type of stain. A weathered deck that needs stripping and sanding takes more work than a newer one getting its first coat. We provide detailed written estimates at no charge — walking the project with you is the only reliable way to give an accurate number.
It depends on the wood and the look you want. Solid stain gives the most colour and UV protection and hides grey and imperfections, but covers the grain. Semi-transparent stain shows the natural wood grain and looks more natural, but offers less UV protection and needs recoating more often. Older or previously coated wood often does best with a solid stain; newer wood you want to show off suits a semi-transparent. We recommend the right option at the estimate.
It varies with sun exposure, foot traffic, the stain type, and how well the wood was prepped. As a general guide, a horizontal deck surface in full sun needs recoating more often than a vertical fence. Semi-transparent stains typically need refreshing sooner than solid stains. The clearest sign it's time is when water stops beading and the colour starts to fade.
New pressure-treated wood usually needs to dry out before it will accept stain — sometimes several weeks to a few months depending on the wood and weather. We assess moisture at the estimate and advise on timing. Staining too early traps moisture and the finish won't hold.
If the wood is grey and rough but structurally sound, it can almost always be cleaned, sanded, and re-stained — no replacement needed. Staining can't fix rot, soft spots, or badly cracked and cupped boards; those need to be replaced first. We tell you honestly at the estimate what's a refinish and what needs repair.
