Stucco is one of the most common exterior finishes in Winnipeg, and one of the most misunderstood when it starts to fail. Small cracks and surface fading are easy to dismiss — until water gets in, freezes, and turns a cosmetic issue into a structural one. Integrity Painting specializes in stucco painting and stucco repair in Winnipeg for both residential and commercial properties. We've been doing this work since 1992, and we know what this climate demands. If your stucco is cracking, fading, or showing moisture damage, we can help — and we'll tell you honestly what it needs.

Winnipeg's freeze-thaw cycle is the single biggest cause of stucco deterioration. When moisture gets into even a hairline crack and freezes, it expands — widening the crack, pushing the stucco away from the substrate, and creating an entry point for more water. Over several seasons, small cosmetic cracks become larger structural ones.
UV exposure compounds the problem. Prairie summers deliver intense direct sun, and stucco that isn't properly sealed will chalk and fade, losing both colour and the surface protection that comes with a sound coating.
Common signs your stucco needs attention include:
-Horizontal or diagonal cracks (especially around windows, doors, and corners)
-Chalky white residue or powdering on the surface
-Paint or stucco that's peeling away in sections
-Discolouration or staining near windows or at the base of walls (often indicates water infiltration)
-Soft spots or hollow-sounding areas when tapped
Catching these early is significantly less expensive than waiting. What starts as a surface repair and repaint can become a stucco removal and re-application if water damage reaches the substrate or framing.
Stucco work requires a different approach than painting a smooth surface. The coating needs to breathe — stucco is a porous material, and sealing it completely traps moisture inside rather than letting it escape. Most exterior paint failures on stucco homes trace back to using the wrong product, or skipping proper surface preparation.
Our stucco painting and repair service covers:
-Stucco inspection and assessment — We evaluate the extent of cracking and damage before recommending a scope of work
-Crack repair — Hairline cracks, larger structural cracks, and sections with lost adhesion are repaired using compatible patching compounds before any coating is applied
-Surface cleaning — Stucco is cleaned to remove chalking, dirt, and loose material that would prevent proper adhesion
-Priming — Bare or repaired areas are primed with a product suited to stucco's porosity
-Breathable topcoat application — We use coatings formulated for stucco that allow moisture vapour transmission while protecting the surface
-Colour matching — For partial repairs, we match the existing colour as closely as possible to minimize the visual difference
-Commercial and residential stucco — We work on detached homes, character houses, apartment buildings, commercial facades, and parkades

Step 1 — Assessment and estimate. We walk the property and assess all stucco surfaces — noting crack locations, severity, and any signs of water damage behind the surface. You get a clear written scope and estimate before anything starts.
Step 2 — Repairs first. No paint goes on until repairs are complete. Cracks are cleaned out, filled with compatible patching material, and allowed to cure. Sections with delamination are removed and replaced if necessary.
Step 3 — Surface preparation. Cleaned, scraped, and primed where required. For stucco in good condition being repainted, we still clean thoroughly and assess adhesion before the topcoat.
Step 4 — Application. Two coats of breathable elastomeric or masonry coating, applied by brush and roller to get into the texture. We work systematically to maintain consistent coverage across the entire surface.
Step 5 — Inspection. We walk the finished work with you, confirm colour consistency, and address any areas that need touching up.
Stucco is a specialty — not every painting contractor understands the product or the failure modes. Over 30 years of Winnipeg work, we've seen what this climate does to stucco and what it takes to repair it properly. We use breathable coatings, repair before we paint, and don't take shortcuts on preparation.
We're BBB accredited since 2008, WCB compliant, and PDCA members. Richard, our Red Seal Journeyman Painter with 15+ years of experience, leads on-site work. Our satisfaction guarantee covers stucco projects: you get the most thorough job you've seen, or we'll repaint for free.
We work on both residential stucco (detached homes, character houses, bungalows) and commercial stucco (apartment buildings, commercial facades, multi-unit complexes) — the service is the same regardless of property type.

Surface fading and minor chalking can usually be addressed with cleaning and a fresh coat of breathable paint. Cracks of any size, peeling, soft spots, or staining near windows and doors typically indicate that repair is needed before repainting. Painting over unrepaired cracks is a short-term fix — the crack will telegraph through the new coating within a season or two. We assess this during the free estimate and tell you honestly what's needed.
Colour matching on stucco is possible but imperfect — stucco texture means the repair will have a different visual character than the surrounding area even with a good colour match, and weathered stucco often has a unique fade pattern that's difficult to replicate. For small repairs, we match as closely as possible and the difference typically becomes less visible as the repair weathers. For larger repairs or cases where appearance is a priority, repainting the entire face is the better approach.
The primary cause is the freeze-thaw cycle. Winnipeg can see dozens of freeze-thaw cycles in a single winter — temperatures that dip below freezing overnight and rise above it during the day. Any moisture in a crack freezes and expands, widening the crack with each cycle. Over several winters, hairline cracks become significant ones. UV damage and building movement (settling, thermal expansion) also contribute. Proper surface coating with a breathable, flexible product slows this process significantly.
It depends on the extent of the damage. Most stucco in good structural condition can be repaired and repainted successfully. Stucco that has significant delamination from the substrate, widespread water infiltration, or damage to the lath or framing underneath typically needs more extensive remediation beyond painting. We assess this during the estimate — if we find something that's beyond a paint-and-repair scope, we'll tell you so rather than selling you work that won't hold.
With proper preparation, appropriate product selection, and sound underlying stucco, a quality stucco repaint typically lasts 7–10 years in Winnipeg's climate. The key variables are surface condition going in (repaired cracks last longer than painted-over cracks), product quality, and UV exposure. South and west-facing walls tend to show wear sooner due to direct sun exposure.
